The Geelong West Giants are incredibly proud to celebrate the signing of Jesse Mellor to the Geelong Cats as a Category B Rookie for the 2026 AFL season, a moment that represents not just individual success, but the strength of community football pathways.
Jesse’s football journey began exactly where so many dreams do: right here at the Geelong West Giants (formally St Peter's - Roosters). Starting in our Auskick program and coached by our now GFNL President - Paul Eastman, he pulled on the Rooster's jumper for the very first time and never looked back. From those early kicks on local ovals, Jesse progressed through every level of our junior pathway, embodying the values of hard work, commitment, and love for the game.
His talent and dedication soon earned him selection with the Geelong Falcons, where he continued to develop into an elite young footballer. Jesse’s rise accelerated further when he represented Vic Country at the Under 18 National Championships, a prestigious honour reserved for the best emerging talent in the country.
All-Australian Honours and AFL Opportunity
In 2025, Jesse’s standout performances were recognised at the highest level when he was named in the 2025 Australian Under 18 All-Australian Team of the Year, confirming his status as one of Australia’s premier young footballers. That same year, his journey took another significant step forward when he was drafted into the Geelong Cats system, progressing through the Cats’ NGA pathway and continuing to impress with his explosive midfield play.
Known for his versatility, goal sense, elite work rate and professionalism, Jesse has stood out at every level he has played. Whether impacting games through the midfield or hitting the scoreboard, his growth has been nothing short of outstanding.
A Special Moment for the Giants
One of the proudest moments for our club came in 2024, when Jesse made his senior debut for the Geelong West Giants. It was a milestone that perfectly captured what community football is all about, watching a local junior run out at senior level for the club that helped shape him.
From six-goal performances to All-Australian honours, Jesse’s rise since then has been electric. Each step has reinforced what is possible when young players are supported, encouraged, and developed from the very beginning.
Proof That Journeys Start Here
Jesse Mellor’s story is living proof that great football journeys really do start at the Geelong West Giants. His success reflects the dedication of his family, coaches, teammates, and the broader football community that has backed him every step of the way.
This is a huge moment for Jesse, his family, and everyone who has supported his journey. As he prepares to pull on the hoops in 2026, the entire Giants community will be cheering loudly and proudly.
Once a Giant, always a Giant.
